Vechalam is a small rural village with 800 farmer families near Vishakhapatnam, AP, India.

The village has one elementary school (1st to 5th grade) with 56 students and 3 teachers. And a high school (6th to 10th grade) with 161 students and
11 teachers.

Siri foundation worked with village community to create a permanent library on Dec 21, 2012 with 2000+ books, required furniture and a full time librarian.  The library is open 365 days with the following schedule

            7:30 Am to 10:30AM  &  3:30 PM to 7:00 PM: Paid Librarian
            10:30 AM to 3:30PM : School sessions
7:00 PM  to 9:30PM : Vidya Volunteer for 10th grade and public tests preparations

The facility has large Reading Room for Adults and another decent size room for kids

Partnership with Village and local community
Siri pledged Rs.17,000 to fix water supply for toilets (restrooms) at a meeting held on Sep 27, 2012. There was a need to fix the playground too, at the same meeting the community responded with Rs50,000 and they completed the work within a month.

Another interesting story unfolded during the execution of this project. A year ago Govt. of Andhra Pradesh initiated a program called “Jala Mani” for safe drinking water at rural schools. The supplied equipment worth Rs1,00,000 has been eating dust and not installed for over a year. With the pledge from Siri now the school has purified drinking water supply and running water for toilets.

It’s an astonishing net social effect of Rs 1,77,000 from a small idea & pledge of Rs17,000 and solved three long pending problems for the school – A safe drinking water, water supply for Toilets and a new playground with fence.

Volunteer work and meeting with kids and parents on 21, Dec 2012. Team is working at the grassroots level.
